12. 2001 St. Louis Rams

The Rams of the Kurt Warner era should be remembered as one of the most explosive teams of all-time. While they will always be thought of as a great offense, they will never be considered a great team because of a stunning Super Bowl XXXVI defeat against the upstart New England Patriots. Some blame cameras, but that is for another discussion.

After winning a storybook Super Bowl in 1999, St. Louis fell off in 2000 under first-year head coach Mike Martz. The Rams made the postseason but fell in the Wild Card round. In 2001, the team found its groove again. The Rams went 14-2 and took home-field advantage, riding their high-octane offense. Warner threw for 4,830 yards and 36 touchdowns while Marshall Faulk gained over 2,000 yards from scrimmage with 21 touchdowns. Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt combined for more than 2,400 receiving yards, providing a devastating duo.

In the playoffs, St. Louis took apart Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional round, pulling away with a 45-17 victory. In the NFC title game, St. Louis defeated the Philadelphia Eagles to advance to a Super Bowl in which it was a two-touchdown favorite, only to squander a chance to be immortal.
