29. 1993 Houston Oilers

This team in many ways led to a franchise now known as the Tennessee Titans. Houston won the first two American Football League titles in 1960 and 1961, but had never reached the pinnacle again. In the late 1980s, the Oilers put together a terrific collection of talent that would make the playoffs in six consecutive seasons. In 1993, it appeared the pieces were in place to win it all.

Houston actually began the season horribly, limping to a 1-4 start. Things were so bad that head coach Jack Pardee benched Warren Moon for Cody Carlson. Carlson then got hurt in his first game, leaving the job to Moon again. Moon led Houston to 11 straight wins and the second seed in the AFC playoffs, with many seeing the Oilers as the team to beat.

In the playoffs, the Oilers once again collapsed. Playing the underdog Kansas City Chiefs, Houston held a 10-0 halftime lead and a 10-7 edge in the fourth quarter at the Astrodome before watching Joe Montana hang 21 points in the final minutes. Kansas City won 28-20 and went to the AFC Championship game, while Houston tore apart the roster in frustration. The Oilers would move after the 1996 season.
