Packers Rumors: Green Bay interested in James Jones, Hakeem Nicks?
By Josh Hill
The Packers might need some help at wide receiver, which could lead to a reunion with a former Aaron Rodgers target.
When the Green Bay Packers lost Jordy Nelson on Sunday afternoon against the Steelers, more than just fantasy football strategies changed. The Packers lost their top target for Aaron Rodgers and now are being thrown into the mix when it comes to signing a free agent wide out who may or may not hit the market before the final roster cuts are made.
Before you delve into any rumors about the Packers looking for wide receivers, it needs to be noted that if there’s a team in the NFL that knows what it’s doing at wide receiver more than the Packers, we haven’t met that team yet. Say what you will about Tom Brady’s rag-tag group of receivers, but no team over therapist five years has been able to as effectively use random receivers to the fullest extent like the Packers have been able to.
That being said, if the Packers deem it something they want to do, it’s not insane to think they’d seek out free agent help to plug the hole that Nelson leaves. As good as they are at mining talent from within, the Packers can’t deny that Nelson’s absence leaves a major hole on their roster.
According to Jason Cole from Bleacher Report, the Packers would be open to a reunion with James Jones should the Giants release him before the regular season begins. Hakeem Nicks also ranks high among the potential free agent receivers that Cole notes might be available before Week 1, although he doesn’t directly link him to the Packers.
While there isn’t a direct link at the moment between the Packers and Nicks, Green Bay was an option when the Packers were looking for potential help at wide out in the offseason and Nicks was looking for a new place to call home after leaving Indianapolis.
Green Bay might not be need to do anything at wide receiver, as they feel great about their depth at the position. But then again this is a top target they lost in Jordy Nelson and replacing him with a deep threat option might not be the worst idea in the world.
