Ryan Mallett ‘angry’ about losing Texans’ quarterback job
By Mike Dyce
Ryan Mallett is angry and disappointed he didn’t win the Houston Texans starting quarterback job.
The Houston Texans came into training camp looking to find their starting quarterback, a two-man race between Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer. Ultimately Texans head coach Bill O’Brien went with Hoyer, who helped get the Cleveland Browns off to a hot start last season.
Mallett let his frustrations out on Tuesday.
“Disappointed? Yeah,” Mallett said. “Angry? Yeah. I thought I did enough to win the job. It wasn’t seen that way.”
Mallett added: “I thought I had a pretty good camp. I thought I was consistent. I wanted this job more than anything.”
Hard to argue with Mallett’s train of though, he completed 15 of 18 passes in his two preseason appearances for 113 yards. He did fail to throw a touchdown though he also did not throw an interception and was particularly efficient.
Going purely on completion percentage Mallett seems like the better option of the two given their performances. Hoyer did throw a touchdown, but it was more a result of the wide receiver after the catch than Hoyer’s throw. Hoyer also has more experience which likely played a factor in his role.
As for how his head coach is handling his anger, O’Brien is fine with it.
“That’s what you want. You don’t want a guy jumping around doing back springs when he gets named the backup,” O’Brien said.
Between the two, Mallett more than likely is the one with quarterback of the future potential.
