The Washington Redskins are going to start Kirk Cousins at quarterback in Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins instead of Robert Griffin III, according to Diana Marie Russini of ESPN. Cousins was listed on the depth chart behind Griffin throughout the offseason and preseason, but with Griffin still recovering from a concussion and playing horribly before it, Cousins is getting the nod.

At this point, it is fair to wonder whether the Redskins coaching staff is done with Griffin. Head coach Jay Gruden left Griffin on the field in Week 2 against the Detroit Lions to take a brutal pounding, finally resulting in a shoulder injury and a concussion. Last year, Gruden spent much of his rookie campaign talking poorly about Griffin to the media, starting an ugly war of words between the two.

Both Griffin and Cousins are in their fourth years, forcing Washington to make a choice. Griffin has an option to be picked up or declined at the end of the season while Cousins is slated to hit free agency. If the Redskins believe that Cousins is the quarterback of the future, it is time to either bench of trade Griffin. While his value is low, Washington could likely fetch a mid-round pick once he is healthy from a team like the New York Jets or Buffalo Bills.

More importantly, all the headaches an distractions from this ugly situation would finally lift from the nation’s capital.

Cousins has played in 14 games throughout his career for Washington and amassed 3,030 yards with a 59 percent completion rate, to accompany 18 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. It appears to be another long season coming for the Redskins whether Cousins, Griffin or Colt McCoy ultimately starts the lion’s share of the games.
