Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles picked a bad time to go on a rough stretch and as such, enter play 11 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East on the last day of August. That’s not a great place to be, but Baltimore still has an outside shot at the postseason via the Wild Card, which they trail by 5.5 games.

The Orioles may see the deficit as too great, especially with having to leap-frog four team before overtaking the Texas Rangers for the final playoff spot. If they do and decide to wave the towel at this juncture, Baltimore would do well to evaluate what they have left in the tank for next season.

Reliever Oliver Drake, and his 0.82 ERA, 23 saves, and 13.5 K/9 ratio at Norfolk will almost definitely deserve a look, especially since he could figure into the team’s bullpen picture next season. Likewise, Jorge Rondon could be vying for a spot thanks to his solid 2015 season, as could lefty Cesar Cabral.

One name to definitely watch for would be former top prospect Dylan Bundy. Bundy has struggled to get back on track since Tommy John surgery and has only pitched 22 innings this season. As such, the Orioles may want to give him a few extra reps in the bullpen in September, although they may also play it cool and shut him down for the winter and begin anew next season.

The Orioles also have a couple of positional prospects worth a look. Outfielder Junior Lake could see some time in September, although the club may be better served by promoting Henry Urrutia or giving those at-bats to lauded rookie Dariel Alvarez.
