San Diego Padres

There may be few teams in baseball that capitalized less on their expectations than did the San Diego Padres. After all the movement generated by new General Manager A.J. Preller, the Padres were expected to contend in the National League West. However, injuries and under-performance led to disappointment and second guessing in sunny San Diego.

Part of the problem is that the Padres arguably made questionable acquisitions for the sake of making additions without necessarily weighing how these players would play together or whether they complemented each other or not. Unfortunately, that made it difficult to expunge some of these players (Justin Upton, James Shields) at the trade deadline and as such, San Diego will also be handcuffed when it comes to finding playing time for vaunted prospects down the stretch.

One such prospect is outfielder Hunter Renfroe, who would seemingly be in a position to get a look in September. The same could be said fellow outfielder Rymer Liriano and first baseman Alex Dickerson. However, all three players are blocked on the depth charts, and both Renfroe and Dickerson would require 40-man roster moves in order to be promoted.

Instead, the Padres will likely look to some familiar faces in September, both as call-ups and by activating injured players. Right-handers Casey Kelley, Nick Vincent, and Leonel Campos, and lefties Robbie Erlin and Frank Garces could all be added to the bullpen. Meanwhile Tommy Medica, Will Middlebrooks, and Alex Dickerson could join Liriano as bench depth.
