According to a report, the Buffalo Bills cutting running back Fred Jackson was GM Doug Whaley going off-script

As the first round of NFL roster cuts starting coming in, one of the most shocking was the Buffalo Bills letting veteran running back Fred Jackson go. Despite the arrival of LeSean McCoy in Buffalo, Jackson has proven to be a valuable asset in the backfield as both a backup and featured back. Having him on the roster seemed like a nice insurance policy for McCoy, which made his release all the more surprising.

It turns out that members of the Bills front office might have been just as surprised as the rest of us.

According to a report from Tim Graham of The Buffalo News, Bills general manager Doug Whaley’s decision to cut Jackson was the result of him going “rogue:”

The idea of one of the chief decision makers in a front office going rogue is mildly absurd. It’s the reason why a movie like Draft Day is considered entirely unrealistic by most sports fans; GMs and people with that kind of power don’t just go off-script all the time in making big decisions.

As Graham said, the Bills certainly aren’t going to throw Whaley under the bus over the cutting of Jackson. However, if more information starts to come out through various sources regarding the idea of Whaley going rogue with the decision, the rest of the Bills front office might not have to.
