Is Daniel Craig Unhappy Playing James Bond?
By Erin Samuels
Daniel Craig has expressed dissatisfaction with playing James Bond, but is he really going to stop playing the role and is he really that unhappy?
Playing James Bond is something that can be as much a blessing as it is a curse as well. Actors who have stepped into the role have been met with praise and are forever associated with one of the most prestigious film franchises in history — but it’s a heavy cross to bear. Actors from Sean Connery to Pierce Brosnan have swatted away Bond questions and attention in their post-007 years and it has led to the belief that the role loses it’s luster after a while.
Daniel Craig seems to be the latest Bond to begin rebelling against the iconic role. It’s not that he’s not grateful for the exposure and the place in cinema history he has, it’s just that playing James Bond as you approach 50-years old isn’t appealing to everyone. In a recent interview with Esquire, Craig not only slammed Bond as being sexist but was pretty ‘meh’ about the idea of playing the character again.
Here’s the excerpt from his interview that has gone global and caused endless speculation about his future as Bond:
"Hopefully my Bond is not as sexist and misogynistic as [earlier incarnations]. The world has changed. I am certainly not that person. But he is, and so what does that mean? It means you cast great actresses and make the parts as good as you can for the women in the movies."
Along with this lightning rod quote, Craig seemed noncommittal about continuing to be Bond, which is really out of his control at this point after signing a multi-picture deal to star as the character in future installments. Of course, there’s always ways to get out of said contract but Craig has one more film he’s committed to and has reportedly said he will honor his contract to it’s conclusion.
That doesn’t really answer the question of whether or not he is unhappy playing Bond. An actor growing tired of a character isn’t all that uncommon — and it hardly means they hate that character. Harrison Ford infamously hated Han Solo but jumped at the chance to reprise the role in The Force Awakens. Fatigue settles in no matter what job you have, and it appears that playing Bond isn’t exempt from this rule.
