Tennessee beats Bowling Green in high-scoring game

An incredibly high-scoring first half with 55 combined points: 20 for Bowling Green and 35 for Tennessee. Tennessee never really got their passing game off the ground during the first half, but it didn’t stop the Volunteers taking a commanding lead over the Bowling Green Falcons  with four rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown in the first half alone. Bowling Green quarterback Matt Johnson threw for two touchdowns and 216 yards, while kicker Tyler Tate had two field goals. But even with those 20 points, Tennessee still had a 15-point lead going into the half.

Tennessee continued racking up the points in the second half. Bowling Green did not since the Volunteers defense figured out how to keep the Falcons from scoring. Still, this was an incredibly high yardage game, with the teams totaling a combined 1161 yards.

Three Stars

Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd had an extremely efficient game with three touchdowns and 87 yards on 14 carries during the first half of the game alone. By the end of the game he had totaled 123 yards.

Also a Tennessee running back, Alvin Kamara started to fulfill his August 11 prediction in which he claimed, “(The offense) is going to be scary.” Kamara totaled 144 yards and two touchdowns.

Bowling Green quarterback Matt Johnson missed the 2014 season with a hip injury, but showed he has recovered and is ready to be an impact player this season. Against Tennessee, he threw for 424, targeting nine different players. Interceptions were a problem for Johnson in 2013, but he made it through this game without getting picked off.

Odds

The Tennessee Vols were a 20.5 favorite over underdog Bowling Green. The Vols won by 29 points, covering the spread.

Next Week

Next week the Vols face off against No. 19 Oklahoma in a 4:00 p.m. home game. Oklahoma is a powerhouse, despite a very weak secondary, and could provide a tough challenge for Tennessee. Bowling Green plays the University of Maryland Terrapins in Maryland. The Terps are coming off of a 50-21 victory over Richmond.
