The Houston Texans need a lot of help this season, and they could look at another former Patriots quarterback to help fill out the roster.

After the last round of cuts to NFL rosters on Saturday, the final phase before the season starts is to see where some of the veterans who were released will sign. There’s no guarantee that they will land anywhere, as Reggie Wayne was released but seems to be eying retirement. Others will be looking to land a gig as a backup somewhere, and one of those players is quarterback Matt Cassel.

Buffalo released Cassel on Saturday, and already there is speculation as to where the quarterback might land in the coming year. You might not have to look far to find out where he might land, as his Patriots heritage might lead to a reunion with Bill O’Brien in Houston.

As opined by Mike Florio from ProFootballTalk, the Texans could be interested in signing Matt Cassel to replace Tom Savage, who was placed on IR this weekend.

"As the Texans deal with the season-ending injury to quarterback Tom Savage and as former Bills quarterback Matt Cassel deals with the fact that he needs a job, the Texans make plenty of sense from a dot-connecting standpoint."

Both Cassel and O’Brien were in New England at the same time, and there seems to be a natural attraction to former Patriots quarterbacks for O’Brien. He has both Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett on roster, and adding Cassel would make it three-of-a-kind for the head coach.

Basically, the Texans want to assemble every player to have ever backed up Tom Brady to see if maybe some of the magic rubbed off. This is bad news for Texans fans who want to see the team win games this season but good news for the likes of Damon Huard and Doug Flutie.
