Saturday night’s season opener between the LSU Tigers and McNeese State Cowboys has been cancelled due to severe weather in the Baton Rouge area.

Fans of the LSU Tigers and McNeese State Cowboys were looking forward to seeing their teams in action after an offseason of waiting for the college football season to begin. Unfortunately, mother nature had other plans in mind.

A lightning delay put the game on hold less than five minutes into the first quarter. Play never resumed, and due to conflicting dates, a makeup game is not going to be feasible.

Each team was only able to have one possession before the delay began.

LSU recorded 11 yards, with sophomore running back Leonard Fournette having the most success. Fournette carried the ball twice for a total of 11 yards. Meanwhile, Sophomore Brandon Harris was 1-of-2 passing for negative four yards in his first game since taking over the starting quarterback job for the Tigers.

The Cowboys had a three-and-out in their only offensive possession of the game, with LSU’s defense looking extremely sharp. McNeese State quarterback Daniel Sams completed his only passing attempt of the game for a nine-yard game, but that was the only production that his offense would see. Junior safety Rickey Jefferson and junior defensive end Tashawn Bower sacked Sams for a six-yard loss, while freshman cornerback recorded a tackle for loss for the Tigers on the other two plays of the possession.

The cancellation gives LSU a major disadvantage for their SEC opener next week against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Sams would have provided the Tigers with at least some in-game practice against a dual-threat quarterback before facing preseason Heisman Trophy candidate Dak Prescott.

Prescott torched LSU in 2014, going off for 373 total yards and three touchdowns, ending the Bulldogs’ 14-game losing streak in the series.
