Just days after parting ways with quarterback Matt Cassel, the Buffalo Bills have decided to bring back the veteran QB to backup incumbent starter Tyrod Taylor.

The team announced on Tuesday that it had re-signed Cassel to the 53-man roster, and cut rookie tight end Nick O’Leary to do so. The team released Cassel during the final round of cuts last Saturday to save the $4.15 million he was due should he have been on the opening day roster under his previous contract.
That type of money was ultimately way too much for a backup, so the Bills let him go test the open market. After failing to find a spot with another team, Cassel returned to Buffalo on a deal that Buffalo News writer Vic Carucci believes to be for the veteran minimum of $900,000 with bonuses that could earn him even more. That being said, no terms were officially disclosed.
Cassel was back on the practice field on Tuesday where head coach Rex Ryan, who talked about having three QBs on the roster throughout training camp, stated that he will be the number two QB, and E.J. Manuel will be the number three.
Cassel was acquired in the offseason to be the starting QB for the Bills after last year’s starter Kyle Orton retired following the season. However, as minicamp and training camp went on, Cassel had been outplayed by fellow newcomer Taylor, who earned the opportunity to open the season under center when the Bills host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday afternoon.
