Sports and snacks go hand-in-hand. Are you optimizing your snacking experience?

Fall has arrived, which is great news for those of us who appreciate the subtle joys of devoting entire weekends to being inert on the couch and screaming at the television between mouthfuls of food. Yes, after months of sports that are not football, football is finally here, and football season contains all the good parts of Christmas (eating and yelling) without any of the bad parts (giving gifts and expressing goodwill), thus making it the true most wonderful time of the year.

Snacking, which is what we call “gorging” when it is done incrementally, is an important component of the football experience, from tailgating to postgame sorrows-drowning. Yet too often it is treated as some sort of afterthought. How many times have you grabbed a package of potato chips and called it good? How many times have you settled for leftovers of questionable freshness? Have some pride, man.

I’m no culinary expert, I must admit, but I consider myself pretty well-versed in the ancient art looking at the television while cramming food into my mouth, so I think I’m qualified to teach people about ten of the best snacks for football season, presented in no particular order. (And by “teach people” I mean “present my opinions and interpretations as indisputable facts.” Hey, it worked for all my humanities professors in college.)

As with all lists, there will probably be points of contention. If you disagree with what’s presented here, give us your superior alternatives in the comments. And if you have any favorite go-to recipes that aren’t a closely guarded family secret, share those as well!
