College Football Week 1 Results Against The Spread

There were a total of 39 FBS vs. FBS games last weekend. One was canceled because of persistent lightning (McNeese State at LSU), so that left us with 38. How did the new point system do? Let’s check that out first!

1: 2-3

2: 9-6

3: 5-4

4: 4-4

5: 0-1

That netted me a total of three points. Missing my only five pointer (Stanford at Northwestern) hurt my week. My total against the spread was 20-18 though. Not quite my goal, but going .500 in an opening week is no easy task. There is a lot of uncertainty this early in the year.

Here are the full college football week 1 results against the spread. Winners against the spread are in BOLD.

North Carolina(-2.5) at South Carolina: HIT! Easy money here. The Gamecocks have a defense that is impressive, and could help decide the SEC East.

Florida International at Central Florida(-13.5): MISS! This was an ugly, ugly game. FIU is better than we think. UCF might be worse.

Oklahoma State(-23.5) at Central Michigan: MISS! The Cowboys were never able to get much separation even though they played a pretty good game.

Western Kentucky(-2.5) at Vanderbilt: MISS! Oh, that garbage touchdown. I was hoping for Vandy to get the two point conversion to tie it so the Hilltoppers could cover in overtime….

Michigan at Utah(-4.5): HIT! If moral victories count for Michigan, this was one. They played arguably better than they did at any time last year besides maybe the opener against Appalachian State.

TCU(-16.5) at Minnesota: HIT! Minnesota’s defense played great, but TCU’s offense couldn’t get out of its way a lot of the time. They might not face a defense this tough in the Big 12 (10) this year though.

Ohio(-7.5) at Idaho: HIT! I should have made this a five point game. Easy money here, folks.

Duke(-7.5) at Tulane: HIT! It was never close.

UTSA at Arizona(-31.5): MISS! Has Larry Coker done a great job building the Roadrunner program or what? They graduate more than half of the team, and still put a scare into Arizona, who is a trendy pick to win the Pac 12.

Colorado(-7.5) at Hawaii: HIT! More easy money. Hawaii only got covered at home once last year. They were never able to pull out a win like this, but they came close.

Michigan State(-17.5) at Western Michigan: MISS! How about that? MAC teams not getting covered at home. Michigan State was running off with this when WMU stormed back a la the Bahamas Bowl last year. You know, if they wouldn’t spot the other team so much of a lead, they might win a few of these…..

Baylor(-36.5) at SMU: MISS! Now you see why I hate huge lines like that. Baylor won by 35, and it wasn’t close for much of the second half, yet they still didn’t cover.

Kent State at Illinois(-14.5): MISS! The Illini might not be a conference doormat anymore. They were impressive in this one.

Washington at Boise State(-12.5): HIT! Washington’s offense was a bumbling mess for much of the game, and they still almost won.

Louisiana-Monroe at Georgia(-35.5): HIT! The Dawgs won going away, and still barely covered.

Stanford(-11.5) at Northwestern: MISS! A team with a senior QB and this much talent should never look as bad as the Cardinal did in this one. Northwestern dominated them from the opening kick. It was only a ten point game, but you never felt like Stanford was going to win.

UTEP at Arkansas(-33.5): HIT! The SEC covered their huge spreads, beat a favored SEC team, a ranked Pac 12 team, and a ranked Big Ten(14) team. Not bad for the first week.

Louisville at Auburn(-10.5): HIT! Auburn was the notable exception. They honestly tried to give this one away, but Louisville wouldn’t take it….

Virginia at UCLA(-19.5): HIT! The Bruins dominated this one, but still lost in the eyes of the spread bettors.

BYU at Nebraska(-7.5): HIT! The Cougars overcame another Taysom Hill injury to win this game. The Cornhuskers stormed back with Hill out, but BYU had the last last laugh. Or maybe @fauxpelini did:

Meanwhile, Nebraska lost its first game under a new coach for the first time since 1958. Granted, there have only been seven chances since then, but the people around here are still antsy. Nevermind the fact that the team looked better than it did last year for the most part.

Just in case you were under a rock and missed the play:

Old Dominion(-4.5) at Eastern Michigan: MISS! Stupid halves….

Penn State(-7.5) at Temple: MISS! I knew better. I let Hackenberg’s game of his life in the bowl game last year cloud my judgment.

Florida Atlantic at Tulsa(-6.5): MISS! This sure was a fun one to watch!

Bowling Green at Tennessee(-21.5): HIT! The Vols gave up their share of points, but the Tennessee offense was virtually unstoppable. This shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Troy at North Carolina State(-25.5): HIT! I did fairly well with the big spreads this week, which is unusual.

Arizona State at Texas A&M(-3.5): MISS! The Aggies kicked it into overdrive to run off with this in the second half.

Louisiana-Lafayette at Kentucky(-16.5): MISS! Way to fall asleep there, Kentucky. It almost cost you the game!

Akron at Oklahoma(-31.5): HIT! The Sooners didn’t do much in the first or fourth quarters, but the ones in the middle they really dominated.

Texas at Notre Dame(-9.5): MISS! I may have been wrong when I said that Texas wouldn’t be as bad as last year. They were awful in this one. They didn’t even show flashes of good play.

Georgia Southern at West Virginia(-20.5): MISS! The Eagles have already been covered as much this year as they were all of last season….

New Mexico State at Florida(-36.5): MISS! I forgot just how bad the Aggies are…..

UNLV at Northern Illinois(-23.5): HIT! UNLV is good enough to go to a bowl game this year, and no one realizes it. They will once the Rebels scare a few more good teams like they did here.

Wisconsin vs. Alabama(-11.5): HIT! It was sweet of the Tide to make Wisconsin feel like they had a chance, wasn’t it?

Texas State at Florida State(-29.5): HIT! The Seminoles just had too many bodies. Texas State hung with them for a half. The Noles scored 38 of their 59 after halftime.

Mississippi State(-20.5) at Southern Mississippi: MISS! The Eagles aren’t as bad as last year, nor are the Bulldogs as good.

Arkansas State at USC(-27.5): HIT! What a methodical beatdown that was…..

Purdue at Marshall(-7.5): HIT! This game was closer than I thought it would be.

Ohio State(-14.5) vs. Virginia Tech: MISS! The Hokies are lucky it was this close after they lost Michael Brewer. One could argue that the Hokies might have won had Brewer been able to stay in the game.
