J.J. Watt loses helmet, still sacks Alex Smith (Video)
JJ Watt doesn’t need a helmet to keep terrorizing quarterbacks.

J.J. Watt and the Houston Texans have had a great deal of trouble slowing down the Kansas City Chiefs in their season-opener for 2015. In the first half, the Chiefs have already posted 27 points while Houston has managed just six points of their own. That doesn’t mean Watt hasn’t done something incredible already, though.
Midway through the second quarter, Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith dropped back to pass. Chiefs right tackle Jah Reid (starting in place of Eric Fisher) was trying to contain Watt, which meant getting up in his face enough to knock Watt’s helmet clear off his head. Because Watt isn’t a normal human—possibly not a human at all—he proceeded to blow by Reid and demolish Smith, all with his helmet lying on the turf.
That has to be absolutely terrifying for a quarterback. Playing against Watt in itself isn’t comforting, but knowing that you can straight up hit him in the face and knock his helmet off, and he’s still going to demolish you must feel way, way worse.
In fairness to Watt and the Texans defense, their offense hasn’t done them any favors in terms of field position. An interception and fumble by Brian Hoyer have given Kansas City short fields, which is hard for any defense to work with.
