Hall of Famer Moses Malone dies at age 60
Moses Malone died on Sunday at the age of 60.
NBA Hall of Famer Moses Malone passed away on Sunday morning. He was 60-years-old.
In 1974 Malone became the first player in basketball history to bypass college and enter the pros directly; he was selected by the ABA’s Utah Stars franchise. A three-time league MVP (1979, 1982, 1983), Malone was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001.
Appropriately nicknamed the Chairman of the Board, he ranks first all-time for offensive rebounds (7,382) and third all-time for total rebounds (17,834). Malone also ranks in the top-10 in league history for career points, free throws, games, minutes and minutes per game.
In 1982-83 Malone anchored the frontcourt of a dynamic 76ers team that included Julius Erving, Maurice Cheeks, Bobby Jones, Andrew Toney, and Marc Iavaroni, and was coached by Billy Cunningham. Philadelphia finished the regular season with a 65-17 mark before putting together one of the greatest postseasons in league history: a 12-1 mark that included sweeps of Bernard King’s Knicks and the defending champion Lakers (avenging a Finals defeat from the year prior). Malone was named league MVP that season thanks to a banner line of 24.5, 15.3 rebounds and 2 blocks per game.
As of post, no cause of death has been released.
