The NFL is reportedly looking into shrinking the number of games that are played in the preseaon
Sunday, the NFL regular season started, but we have some news to talk about regarding the games that come before what we’re seeing this weekend. The NFL preseason, as we know, has come under a lot of scrutiny over the years some some things might be changing.
According to a report from Mike Florio over at Pro Football Talk, the league is indeed actively looking into shrinking the number of preseason games the teams play. Right now, all teams play four preseason games before they head into the regular season, five for the two teams that play in the Hall of Game game the first week of August. Right now, they’re looking into shaving off two preseason games, which they can do without the consent of the union.
The main issue under the microscope right now is the revenue that might go out the window. While the games don’t count, people are so eager to have football in their lives that people do pay tickets to turn out to the stadium, plus millions watch on television. All things considered here, the NFL could lose some serious coin by cutting down the preseason. However, also stated in the report, they may be able to make up for the lost revenue by expanding either the regular season or the playoffs, something that has been whispered about before.
Whatever the case my be, a lot of people will ultimately be happy to hear the NFL is considering this. Too many times over the years we’ve seen some of the best players in the league lost to injuries accrued in a game that, well, really doesn’t count for anything. Case in point: the Packers and Aaron Rodgers lost their best wide receiver in Jordy Nelson the third game of their preseason slate.
There’s a lot that will likely have to go into the final decision to cut down the slate, but at least they’re talking about it. That’s a start.
