The Rams have a little problem at running back.

When running Rams back Tre Mason hurt his hamstring in the final preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts, he said of his injury, “It was just a little tweak. It’s just tight. It got a little sore.”

Clearly it was more than a little tightness and soreness. Mason has been ruled out for the Rams’ season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. Good thing the Rams picked star running back Todd Gurley in the first round of the 2015 draft. Oh wait. He is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered during his final year at Georgia.

At least they have Zac Stacy. Oh no. That’s right. They traded him to the New York Jets back in May after Stacy famously tweeted “yikes” when he saw his team invest a first-round pick in a running back.

That leaves Benny Cunningham as the Rams starter today.

Who? Yes. This is the same Benny Cunningham who started twice in 2014 for a total of six carries, including just three rushing yards in his Week 7 start against the Seahawks. This is his third season in the NFL, though, and Cunningham has a chance to prove his is better than his previous statistics indicate.

Cunningham feels prepared, saying to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, ““Throughout the offseason you don’t prepare to go be a backup. You prepare to be a starter. I feel like that’s every running back in the NFL. So when the opportunity is given to us, we just want to make the most of it.”
