Jordan Matthews takes helmet-to-helmet hit, only leaves game briefly (Video)

Eagles receiver Jordan Matthews took a scary hit and walked away relatively unfazed

Jordan Matthews didn’t have a big first half for the Philadelphia Eagles in their Week One matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football, but he was coming to life through the first 10 minutes of the third quarter. However, a scary blow to the head almost ended the night prematurely for the talented young receiver.

Matthews made a catch and tried to cut it to the outside to get some yards after the catch. Justin Durant for the Falcons first got a hold of him, but then safety William Moore came in and delivered a scary helmet-to-helmet blow on Matthews:

Expectedly, Matthews was a bit shaken up after the play and stayed down briefly. He was soon on his feet, though, and went to the sidelines to get checked out by the trainers. Just a few plays later, he was back on the field like nothing had happened.

Perhaps the craziest part of this is that there wasn’t a flag thrown on the play. In case you’re thinking it wasn’t helmet-to-helmet, here’s a still of the moment of contact:

There’s obviously going to be big hits in an NFL game, but if officials and the league are trying to limit head injuries, these are the types of plays that have to be correctly called and penalized. If they’re not, than what’s really the point of trying?
