New York Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony still considers himself among the NBA elite, and doesn’t take kindly to those that question it.

Carmelo Anthony hasn’t necessarily had the best go of things since coming to the New York Knicks during the 2010-2011 NBA season. In four and a half seasons with the Knicks, Melo and company have finished better than 5th place in the Eastern Conference just once, have been bounced in the first round of the playoffs twice, and missed the postseason in each of the last two seasons.

Not exactly a beacon of success.

With those struggles, the Knicks’ fanbase has grown decidedly testy and as such, they are bound to lash out at both the team and its chosen leader. Now while the team has handled such disdain with relative grace, Anthony hasn’t been quite so receptive.

Take for instance this exchange between Anthony and a fan on Instagram, who had a bit of a debate over whether or not Anthony is truly among the NBA’s elite any longer.

Anthony apparently feels that is one of the dumbest questions he’s ever been asked, but in reality it may have been relatively fair, if not a bit premature.

At 30-years-old, Anthony is a 10-time All-Star who has averaged 25.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists over his NBA career, giving him a career VORP of 25.6.  Additionally, his production was right around his career averages last season when he opted for season-ending knee surgery in February.

However, the judgement on whether or not Anthony belongs with the NBA elite goes back to his leadship skills with his team and his ability to push them to the promised land, something Knicks fans have been predicting since acquiring him from Denver. Unfortunately, the Knicks have been mired in mediocrity as they’ve been unable to put anyone on the court to compliment Anthony’s playing style.

Want to put away the questions about being among the NBA elite Carmelo? Win a championship, or at least lead a championship quality team. Until then, it’s probably best to just block out the noise.
