Jordan Spieth will have none of your bandwagon fandom
By Josh Hill
Jordan Spieth is an American hero and is 100 percent anti-bandwagon fan.
We are nearing a presidential election almost a year from now, and we’re going to start hearing platforms that candidates are running on and slogans that rank all over the board. But one policy that we can all get behind is a policy that is 100 percent against bandwagon fans — a platform that Jordan Spieth is all about running with.
During his press conference this week for the BMW Championship, the Masters champion noted just how much he dismisses bandwagon fans and critics that he can’t stand.
"“Two weeks ago everyone said, you’re the best there is, you’re the best in the world, you’re awesome, man, not a bad thing said, and then Jason wins — Jason is the best in the world, man, he’s awesome. And then Rickie wins. Rickie wasn’t even what you guys were talking about. You guys were talking about me, Rory and Jason. Rickie wins, and all of a sudden people are coming out of their igloos and they’re saying, man, that’s my guy. He’s the best in the world. It’s just what can you do for me now. The more I can smile and laugh about that and the fact that people are just about — you have true fans, there’s no doubt, and I love true fans and I’m happy to take any bandwagon fans there are for me. It’s just interesting from our point of view seeing what’s published, I guess.”"
Spieth isn’t really all that wrong in his assertion here. It’s not so much a bandwagon effect as it is a knee jerk effect where people overreact to the latest fad or the hottest winner of the hour. Of course, this could be misconstrued as Spieth being bitter about not being the flavor of the month anymore, but that’s reading a bit too much into his comments.
Whether you like it or not, it’s in the nature of sports fans and critics to jump on the flavor of the month and run with it as long as possible. It’s part of what makes fandom what it is, as loyalty in sports is a rarity and it’s a badge of honor that everyone who has it wears with pride.
Spieth isn’t a bad golfer, and he’ll soon again be a flavor of the month as the endless cycle continues.
