Training camp was a bit of a circus for the New York Jets. When you have your probable starting quarterback punched in the face and having his jaw broken it certainly makes some waves. When you cut the player who punches the quarterback only to have him picked up by a division rival who’s head coach is the guy who used to coach the Jets? Priceless.
The 1-0 Jets practiced today and making his return to practice was quarterback Geno Smith. It was the first time that he came to practice since the incident.
Dom Cosentino of NJ.com reports that Smith doesn’t believe he did anything wrong in the incident.
"“You know what? I can’t really say that,” Smith said. “I don’t regret anything. I don’t think I did anything wrong. You can’t go back in time.”"
When Smith, went down, veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick took over the starting role in Chan Gailey’s offense. Gailey is Fitzpatrick’s former offensive coordinator with the Buffalo Bills.
In last week’s 31-10 win over the Cleveland Browns, Fitzpatrick went 15-of-24 for 179 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Per Sportrac, Smith is set to make $1.3 million this year, in the next to last season of his rookie contract.
Geno isn’t healthy enough to take the field quite yet. He still needs time to let his jaw heal and then take some reps. The question is, if the Jets are winning and Fitzpatrick is playing well, does Smith even get to see the field? Would the Jets change things to have Smith take over a spot that was probably going to be his?
