The Houston Texans have named Ryan Mallet the starter for the Week 2 match up against the Carolina Panthers.

It’s official, one week into the 2015 NFL season the Houston Texans benched Brian Hoyer and have decided to move forward with Ryan Mallett under center, for at least the Carolina Panthers game.

“He’s put in a lot of time in the meeting room, practiced well. We are looking forward to seeing him play well,” O’Brien said. “He’s a decisive player. Let it rip and go play quarterback.”

O’Brien added that this wasn’t anything against Hoyer.

Ryan gave us a spark. This isn’t an indictment against Brian. Ryan played well and has practiced hard. This is Ryan’s opportunity,” O’Brien said.

It is kind of surprising that a player who overslept and missed practice shortly after Hoyer was named the starter in training camp so quickly into the season.

O’Brien said it was ironically a wake-up call for Mallett.

“When Ryan overslept, that was a wake-up call for him. Since that time, he’s come a long way,” O’Brien said.

Hoyer had a short leash, getting pulled in the season-opener and losing the starting job days later. O’Brien said Mallett will get a longer leash and a higher level of tolerance for mishaps as he develops.

What are the odds on him changing his mind again this season?
