29. 2007 Jake Peavy
19-6 2.54 ERA
223 strikeouts
19 wins
The San Diego Padres were oh so close to making the playoffs back in 2007. They lost an epic playoff to the eventual pennant winning Colorado Rockies. If the Padres win that playoff game? Maybe they make a Rockies like run. Maybe Jake Peavy’s 2007 season is remembered a bit more.
Peavy at the top of his game was one of the most underrated pitchers in the game. Maybe because he was pitching in San Diego and not L.A. or New York.
Peavy got the pitching triple crown in 2007, leading the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts and finished seventh in MVP voting.
Among NL players, Peavy was fifth in the league in WAR that year and the highest pitcher. His 2.84 FIP was best in the league. He was also tied for first in Win Probability Added.
His WHIP of 1.06 was the best in the league and his H/9 rate was second among NL pitchers.
Peavy never had that kind of dominating season again. He’s made one All-Star team since then as injuries took their toll. He threw 223 innings that year. He’s only thrown over 200 twice since that season after doing it in 2005 and 2006.
