Next: Who Will Put Up Big Numbers At QB?
Sep 12, 2015; Piscataway, NJ, USA; Washington State Cougars quarterback Luke Falk (4) attempts to pass against Rutgers Scarlet Knights during second half at High Points Solutions Stadium. The Washington State Cougars defeated Rutgers Scarlet Knights 37-34.
Mandatory Credit: Noah K. Murray-USA TODAY Sports
Quarterback:
Best Bets:
Luke Falk, Washington State ($9,800):Ā Wyoming has given up nearly as many yards rushing as passing this year, but since all of Washington Stateās ārunā plays are actually short passes, you can just add them together. In short, Wyomingās defense has been awful, and the Cougars are going to exploit it.
Trevone Boykin, TCU ($10,500):Ā SMUās defense is equal opportunity bad. They give up a ton of yards on the ground and through the air. That bodes well for Boykin, but what makes him a little lesser of an option is the prospect of this game being a blowout. Boykin will likely only get three quarters of production, so I have a hard time believing that he can match Falkās point total.
Honorable Mention:
Jared Goff, California ($8,800):Ā The Texas defense is 98th against the pass, and Cal is like Washington State lite so far this year. Goff will throw the ball a ton, and the only thing that keeps him from being an elite option is the fact that the game is in Austin. The crowd may get to Goff some, but they canāt (legally) get on the field and knock down a pass. The guys on the field have to do that, and they havenāt done that well at it so far.
C.J. Beathard, Iowa ($6,700):Ā Beathard is proving to be a more than capable passer and a bruising runner. He is 30/49 with 426 yards and four touchdowns through the air, and has 103 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Pitt has a solid defense, but the loss of Conner also puts a strain on the Pitt defense. The Iowa State game was a coming out party for Beathard. There is a reason that he won the job over Jake Rudock. His dual threat ability at this price could be a nice bargain.
Dark Horse:
Perry Orth, South Carolina ($6,600):Ā Orth is now the starter with Connor Mitch done for the year. Georgia is 93rd in the nation against the pass, and the Gamecocks will likely have to throw to stay in this one. Orth could be a sneaky scorer on Saturday night.
My pick: Beathard
Next: Should You Pay At RB?
Sep 5, 2015; Fayetteville, AR, USA; Arkansas Razorbacks running back Alex Collins (3) runs for a first down against the UTEP Miners during the second quarter at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports
Running Back:
Best Bets:
Nick Chubb, Georgia ($10,000):Ā South Carolina has been trampled on the ground this year, giving up 415 rushing yards over two games. With all due respect to North Carolina and Kentucky, neither of them are as dangerous on the ground as Chubb and Georgia are. The Bulldogs could have three 100 yard rushers in this game. Herschel Walker and Todd Gurley might top the century mark just for good measure. All kidding aside, Chubb will still get the bulk of the carries, and has a great shot at hitting 200 yards on the ground.
Alex Collins, Arkansas ($8,600):Ā Does anyone remember the Texas Tech-Arkansas game from last year? I do. The Hogs only attempted two passes in the second half, and didnāt punt. What that means is they chewed up yards by the mouthful and Tech was powerless to stop them. It is going to happen again. Collins doesnāt have to split carries with Jonathan Williams this year, meaning he should have a monster day. Rawleigh Williams and Kody Walker are good bets to get some carries as well.
Honorable Mention:
Brian Hill, Wyoming ($6,300):Ā For all that Wyoming does wrong, they can still run the ball. That is bad news for Washington State, who is 108th in rush defense, and one of those games was against Portland State. With Paul Perkins, Derrick Henry, and Jordan Canzeri all facing run defenses in the top 30, I would much rather spend less and take Hill.
Sony Michel, Georgia ($6,100):Ā Calling Michel a backup is very misleading, but fortunately for us, he is priced like a backup. Michel has racked up 34.6 FanDuel points in two games, which is better than a lot of starters. He will still see plenty of touches for Georgia, and should have plenty of success against the beleaguered Gamecock defense.
Dark Horse:
Xavier Jones, SMU ($5,600):Ā TCU has given up 145 yards per game on the ground, and Jones seems to have supplanted Prescott Line as the starter for the Ponies. Of course, there is always a chance that the Mustangs abandon the run trying to keep up with TCU. If you are really daring you can throw a dart with Rawleigh Williams and hope it sticks.
My picks: Chubb and Collins
Next: Who Are The Best Receivers?
Nov 29, 2014; Arlington, TX, USA; Texas Tech Red Raiders wide receiver Jakeem Grant (11) cannot make the catch in the end zone as Baylor Bears safety Collin Brence (38) defends during the second half at AT&T Stadium. The Bears defeated the Red Raiders 48-46. Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports
Wide Receiver:
Best Bets:
Gabe Marks, Washington State ($7,000):Ā Marks was a beast against Rutgers, hauling in 14 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. Expect more of the same against Wyoming, who is ranked 91st in pass defense. The Cougars are going to throw a lot. Anyone going out in pass patterns for Wazzu is worth a flier on Saturday night.
Jakeem Grant, Texas Tech ($6,400):Ā Grant has emerged as option A for Patrick Mahomes. The Tech passing offense is firing on all cylinders, but they are facing off against a tough Arkansas defense. That said, Grant is the only TT receiver that I would trust tonight. He will get his. Everyone else is a bit of a risk.
Honorable Mention:
Pharoh Cooper, South Carolina ($8,100):Ā The Gamecocks are likely going to throw to try and stay in this one, and Cooper is among the elite receivers in the country. He is a playmaker who can do a little of everything. He may get a few carries. He may even throw a few passes. The only sure thing is that he is the focal point of the South Carolina offense, and he will get touches in some way, shape, or form.
River Cracraft, Washington State ($6,500):Ā I have no qualms about starting all three of Washington Stateās wide receivers and their quarterback. That is how much they throw the ball, and how much success they will have, against Wyoming.
Dark Horse:
Matt VandeBerg, Iowa ($5,700):Ā VandeBerg had a big game against in-state rival Iowa State, and has established himself as C.J. Beathardās favorite target. He will play the role that Marvin McNutt had in this offense for years. Even though this is a run-first team, VandeBerg is leading the Big 10(14) with 15 receptions so far this year.
My picks: Marks, VandeBerg, and Chris Godwin. Godwin has ten catches through two games, and Rutgersā secondary is shot.
Next: Who Will Produce At TE?
Sep 5, 2015; Gainesville, FL, USA; Florida Gators tight end DeAndre Goolsby (30) runs with the ball against the New Mexico State Aggies during the second quarter at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports
Tight End:
Best Bet:
DeAndre Goolsby, Florida ($3,000): Goolsby has been a favorite target of whichever QB is on the field for the Gators. He has six receptions for 133 yards and a touchdown in the first two games. He has seen more action in the passing game than Jake McGee, and seems to be the safer Gator TE right now. Considering Floridaās penchant for using the short passing game, Goolsby is a pretty safe option.
Honorable Mention:
Jerell Adams, South Carolina ($3,100): The QB switch in Columbia could mean more targets for Adams. He caught a touchdown from new starter Perry Orth last week after Connor Mitch was hurt. He should be a nice, big target for a QB getting used to his surroundings.
Dark Horse:
Chad Olsen, Fresno State ($2,200): The Bulldogs are going to have all kinds of issues trying to run against Utah. They will likely have more success in the short passing game. Enter Olsen, who leads MWC tight ends in touchdowns, and is second in yards and receptions.
My pick: Olsen
Stay tuned for the picks against the spread for all of tomorrowās games! They will be up an hour before the noon eastern kickoffs for you parlayers!
