The Arizona Cardinals will be without their featured running back, as Andre Ellington will miss Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears with a lingering knee injury. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cards will trot out Chris Johnson in Ellington’s stead. Rookie David Johnson will also see reps.
With Andre Ellington out, Cardinals start RB Chris Johnson. Rookie RB David Johnson also will get some work in Johnson + Johnson backfield.

The injury for Ellington carries on an unsettling trend from last season. After rushing for 5.5 yards per attempt in 2013, Arizona expected a breakout year in 2014. However, the team’s sixth round pick out of Clemson was dinged up all season long, and only played in 12 games. During the team’s season opener last week, Ellington rushed 12 times for 68 yards and a touchdown.
Arizona now leans heavily on the man once known as CJ2K to carry the load. Despite being a durable back throughout his career, Johnson’s production has never sniffed the levels it did during his sophomore campaign, in which he ran for 2,006 yards and 14 touchdowns. Last season with the New York Jets he saw career lows in attempts, yards and targets out of the backfield.
