Could Cowboys look at Tim Tebow during Tony Romo injury?

Texas Governor is campaigning for the Dallas Cowboys to sign Tim Tebow to to replace injured Tony Romo at quarterback.

The Dallas Cowboys were dealt a huge blow on Sunday when they lost Tony Romo to a broken collarbone. The injury will keep the quarterback out of action for the next eight weeks, leaving the 2-0 Cowboys to find someone to fill his shoes.

While Brandon Weeden came in and looked excellent, completing all seven of his pass attempts for 73 yards and a touchdown, not to mention a QB rating of 149.7, Dallas still needs to make at least one addition to the roster. With Weeden being the only other quarterback on the depth chart, the Cowboys will need to at least add a back-up for Sunday’s game.

If the team is looking for suggestions, the governor of Texas may have one. That’s right folks, Texas governor Greg Abbott is campaigning for the Cowboys to bring Tim Tebow to town.

After sitting out the 2013 season, Tebow was one of the final cuts from Philadelphia Eagles camp this summer. In four games, he completed 21 of 36 passes for 286 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. He also ran for 82 yards on 14 carries, tallying another touchdown but also coughing up two fumbles.

The former Heisman Trophy winner has never been able to carry his success at the University of Florida to the NFL. In three seasons – two with the Denver Broncos and one with the New York Jets – Tebow has completed just 47.9% of his passes (173 of 361) and thrown for 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He’s also rushed for 12 touchdowns and 989 yards on 197 carries.

Weeden acquitted himself nicely on Sunday and has earned the shot to start on Sunday. That leaves Dallas with the need to add only a back-up, but someone that could step in should Weeden faulter.

While he may be an appealing name for the Cowboys, at least from a P.R. perspective, the signing of Tebow would not necessarily be the most practical. While he looked better this preseason, many will still question whether or not he can be trusted if put into game action. With other quarterbacks available like T.J. Yates, Matt Flynn, Michael Vick, and Tavaris Jackson, the pool may play against Tebow going against Dallas.

Still, it would certainly make for some interesting story-lines, both for Tebow and for the Cowboys. But it is far from a match made in heaven, and is likely more of a pipe-dream than a reality at this point.
