Another great running back option to consider if you need a boost in the backfield is the Redskins’ breakout star of week 2 Matt Jones.  I had Jones on my preseason deep league watch list, and the rookie exploded onto the mainstream fantasy radar with a monster game against the Rams.

Jones has the talent to contribute right away, but the one thing holding him back is the presence of Alfred Morris.  Morris will likely get the majority of the work in Washington going forward, but Jones definitely opened eyes on Sunday. Against the Rams, Jones took 19 carries and ripped off 123 yards while finding the end zone twice.  He added 23 yards on three catches and made plays all over the field.

Knowing what your team needs is key to making your top week 3 waiver wire pickup. Jones has much more long-term upside than James Starks, so if you can afford to give him room to grow claim him over Starks.  If you need someone right away, Starks is a safer pickup and makes a better immediate option to play since he’ll get the work if Lacy is out. Jones workload is the big question to his value going forward, but his upside is undeniable after he trampled what we thought was a solid Rams’ defense.

Next week, the Redskins take on the Giants on a quick turnaround on Thursday Night Football.  If coach Jay Gruden keeps getting him the ball, look for Matt Jones to be a fantasy factor the rest of the way.
