College Football Results Against The Spread Week 3
By Mike Marteny
At first glance, this looks like a rough week. If I were just picking the games straight up, I would have done okay. There were many teams that didn’t cover the spreads. On the bright side, I did go 3-1 in my five point games! Here is the rundown of the points system. Here are the picks if you would like to follow along. Season totals are in parenthesis.

This week I lost an appalling 26 points! That puts me at -19 on the season! The biggest mistake that a gambler can make is going crazy on wagers trying to make up for lost money, or in this case, points. I am still a respectable 69-72 against the spread on the season after a 23-29 week. It is my first time under .500 on the year. I just need to trust what teams have shown me on the field to get back above water!
Here are my college football results against the spread week 3. Winners against the spread are in BOLD.
Clemson(-6.5) at Louisville: MISS! I am a believer in Deshaun Watson. The rest of the Clemson offense? Not so much after watching this mess….
Florida State(-8.5) at Boston College: HIT! What a dominant performance by the Florida State defense. It was perhaps the best defensive performance I have seen so far. The offense didn’t look very good, but that could also be because of Boston College’s defense. They did a really good job as well.
New Mexico at Arizona State(-27.5): HIT! This was never close. I still never really felt like ASU was going to cover either.
Tulsa at Oklahoma(-30.5): MISS! How was I supposed to know that the Sooners weren’t going to run the ball until the fourth quarter? Of course, they were well on the way to covering until Tulsa scored 14 points in 17 seconds to end the first half. That changed the course of the game.
South Florida at Maryland(-6.5): HIT! My first five pointer of the season! Of course, my fours went to hell…..
UNLV at Michigan(-33.5): HIT! This was never a game. The score doesn’t do justice to just how dominant Michigan was. Of course, the Wolverines were still sketchy through the air.
Air Force at Michigan State(-26.5): MISS! I knew better. The Spartan defense has a couple of holes this year.
Kent State at Minnesota(-24.5): MISS! What a disgusting showing by the Minnesota offense. Kent might be the worst team in the MAC. After all, Illinois beat them by 49, yet the Gophers nearly squandered this game a couple of times.
Buffalo at Florida Atlantic(EVEN): MISS! So much for home field advantage. The Bulls destroyed them.
Nevada at Texas A&M(-34.5): MISS! I deserved this one. I knew better.
Illinois at North Carolina(-9.5): MISS! This is the Tarheel team that the voters, and fans, expected to see.
Connecticut at Missouri(-21.5): HIT! Why didn’t I put more points on this? Missouri’s offense is nearly as bad as Minnesota’s! I feel bad for UConn. I agree with the faking of the field goal. You could see that their defense was getting tired. I understand why they didn’t want to go to overtime. Honestly, they outplayed Missouri and deserved the win.
Wake Forest(-6.5) at Army: MISS! Wake was shut out in the first half. This was the first of many games in which I picked the winner right, but just missed on the spread.
Central Michigan at Syracuse(-7.5): MISS! A dismal second half by the Orange offense let this game get into overtime, which doomed my pick.
Northwestern at Duke(-3.5): MISS! Okay, I’m a believer in Northwestern. That defense is very good, and the offense in one of the best in the Big Ten(14) west. Of course, Bishop-Gorman High School has a better offense than most teams in the Big Ten West…..
Georgia State at Oregon(-44.5): MISS! I deserved this one too. Of course, only the Ducks could score 61 and not cover…..
Rice(-8.5) at North Texas: HIT! The Owls continued the strong showings by road teams this week. There is a lot of bold on the left side.
Temple(-10.5) at Massachusetts: MISS! This was a good showing by UMass. The Minutemen exposed Temple’s weakness through the air. Blake Frohnapfel threw for 393 yards on the Owls.
Ball State(-4.5) at Eastern Michigan: MISS! Well, so much for that. It was fun while it lasted, huh Eagles?
Memphis(-3.5) at Bowling Green: HIT! The Falcons may have lost, but the game didn’t disappoint. I figured it would be one of the best of the day, and it was. It was must-see TV!
Louisiana Tech at Kansas State(-9.5): MISS! It’s games like this that make me wish the Wildcats were forced to play a good team earlier. This was an exciting game with Kansas State foiling the upset bid in the third overtime.
Troy at Wisconsin(-35.5): MISS! I’m not really surprised. This was a methodical beatdown by Wisconsin. Why do more than you have to?
Northern Illinois at Ohio State(-31.5): HIT! I knew the line was a little high, but wow, I didn’t expect the Buckeyes to almost lose. If they don’t find a QB before the Michigan State game, they won’t make a repeat trip to the Championship game.
Cincinnati(-19.5) at Miami(OH): MISS! What an ugly game for the Bearcats. And they may be missing their QB for at least a game.
East Carolina at Navy(-4.5): MISS! Okay, so, I completely missed this one.
UTSA at Oklahoma State(-24.5): HIT! The Roadrunners are not a bad team. You wouldn’t know that if you watched this game. The Cowboys dominated them start to finish.
Virginia Tech(-6.5) at Purdue: HIT! It doesn’t get much easier than this one.
Georgia Tech(-2.5) at Notre Dame: MISS! Reports of the demise of the Irish have been greatly exaggerated.
Nebraska at Miami(FL)(-3.5): MISS! Oh you stupid, undisciplined Hurricanes that got two touchdowns called back in the second half!
Auburn at LSU(-6.5): HIT! I only wagered on this game and the VT game this weekend, so I made out a lot better than my column did!
Western Kentucky at Indiana(-1.5): MISS! This was an exciting game that really could have gone either way, and did. I can’t be too disappointed about missing this. It was another fun game to watch.
Utah State at Washington(-7.5): MISS! I give up on the Aggies. I really don’t know how to pick them right now.
South Carolina at Georgia(-16.5): HIT! The writing was on the wall. It is unfortunate, because this has been a really good game for about five years or so.
Charlotte at Middle Tennessee State(-20.5): HIT! This was purely a guess because I don’t know much about Charlotte. It worked out okay0
Southern Mississippi at Texas State(-2.5): HIT! This was another fun one to watch if you could catch it. It wasn’t widely shown.
Texas Tech at Arkansas(-11.5): MISS! It’s rough times in Fayetteville right now. They might not win a game in their division.
North Carolina State(-18.5) at Old Dominion: MISS! I missed just about everything I could this week.
Colorado(-3.5) vs. Colorado State: HIT! This is always an entertaining game. Once again, it didn’t disappoint!
Florida(-3.5) at Kentucky: MISS! Just when I thought Kentucky was ready to take that next step, they get dominated by the Florida defense. There really isn’t any shame in that. There are several future NFL players on that side of the ball for the Gators. On offense, not so much….
California(-5.5) at Texas: MISS! The Texas defense is seriously bad, but Jerrod Heard is exactly what the Longhorns needed. Texas will at least be competitive this year. I was on the record as saying they wouldn’t make a bowl game. I tend to think they do now.
Rutgers at Penn State(-9.5): HIT! Rutgers might be the worst team in a power five conference. We will find out for sure this weekend when they play Kansas.
UTEP(-3.5) at New Mexico State: MISS! Stupid halves…..
South Alabama at San Diego State(-17.5): HIT! Does this count as a statement game for USA?
Pittsburgh at Iowa(-5.5): MISS! That’s what I get for picking Iowa…..
Stanford at USC(-9.5): MISS! USC’s creampuff schedule had me fooled.
San Jose State at Oregon State(-7.5): HIT! Welcome back Storm Woods!
SMU at TCU(-37.5): HIT! Does anyone else wonder what Baylor is going to do to TCU’s defense this year? This unit is not nearly as strong as it was last year, and Baylor almost hung 60 on them last year.
Iowa State at Toledo(-7.5): HIT! Too bad I don’t get extra points for hitting it just right! I called Toledo by seven.
Wyoming at Washington State(-24.5): MISS! Good grief…..
Mississippi at Alabama(-7.5): HIT! It’s time to take Ole Miss seriously. They beat the Tide for consecutive seasons for the first time ever!
BYU at UCLA(-16.5): HIT! I will admit that I didn’t see the game being this close, but it was a fun way to finish off an interesting day.
Utah(-14.5) at Fresno State: HIT! I wasn’t expecting this many points from the Utes, but oh well. The results are what count.
The road teams went an impressive 32-20 against the spread. I guess I should have just picked all road teams!
Stay tuned for this week’s games picked against the spread, and FanDuel lineups for the NCAA and NFL!
