High Value Running Backs

Giovani Bernard (4,700): Bernard is affordable priced on DraftKings costing just 4,700.  He took the majority of the timeshare in the Cincinnati backfield last week after Jeremy Hill had fumbling problems.  Gio seized the opportunity and ripped off 123 yards on his 20 carries and added 16 yards on three catches.  It will be fascinating to see how much of the load he gets this week to see if last week was an aberration or if he’s in line for more work going forward.

Devonta Freeman (4,600): With rookie Tevin Coleman sidelined, Devonta Freeman will carry the load for the Falcons running game while Tevin Coleman deals with his rib injury for the next few weeks.  Last week, Freeman found the end zone and posted 15.9 DraftKings points even though he only had 25 yards on 12 carries and 34 yards on four catches.  He’s still worth a look despite the low yardage totals since he doesn’t have a proven backup and will get as much work as he can handle Sunday against the Cowboys.

Danny Woodhead (4,400): Woodhead is a pass-catching back which makes him a nice value on DraftKings. In week 1, Woodhead ran for two touchdowns so his 21.4 DraftKings points were understandable, but he followed that up with 16.4 DraftKings points in week two mostly on the strength of his six catches for 68 yards.  As long as he’s so involved in the Bolts’ passing game and getting the short-yardage work at the goal line, Woodhead is a steal at just 4,400.

Dion Lewis (4,200): Lewis is another pass-catching back that makes sense on DraftKings.  He has posted 16.0 and 24.8 DraftKings points in his first two weeks with the Patriots, and this week they have a tasty matchup against the Jaguars.  Starting a Patriots running back is always risky since coach Bill Belichick changes them with no warning, but so far this season he has seemed pretty committed to Lewis who has been impressive in the first two weeks of the season and a nice value at just 4,200.

Bilal Powell (3,000): The Jets have pounded the ball and played defense on their way to a 2-0 start to the season.  While Chris Ivory has been getting most of the work, Powell has carved out a nice chunk of carries for himself as well.  In week 1, Powell had 12 carries for 62 yards and two catches for 16 yards in the Jets win over the Browns.  He followed that up in week 2 with 12 more carries for 38 yards and 16 yards on four catches.  On a short week this week and with Chris Ivory reportedly “very sore,” Powell could be in store for even more work this week against the Eagles. As long as Ivory plays, Powell will have a ceiling, but he’s a solid inexpensive option who should get a good amount of touches at the very least.

Jeremy Langford (3,000): Langford put together a strong preseason and entered the year as Matt Forte’s primary backup in Chicago.  Although he only had one carry in week one, last week he took six carries for 21 yards and a touchdown.  The Bears are having to be careful with Forte and keep him on a “pitch count,” and he’s also been dealing with a knee issue that Coach John Fox is playing coy about.  Langford could get increased opportunity if they go heavy in the running game with Jimmy Clausen under center. Forte has also been dealing with a knee issue this week. This week, the Bears are in Seattle making Langford a dangerous risk to play, but there’s also a good chance that the game gets out of hand and he could pick up some garbage time scoring.
