Mark Davis: Raiders will paint 50-yard line gold
The Oakland Raiders seemed to be rebelling by not painting their 50 gold, but it turns out that’s not the case.
The Oakland Raiders looked to be the one NFL team that wasn’t celebrating the 2015 season. While the 31 other teams in the league were painting the 50s on their fields gold to honor and celebrate the upcoming Super Bowl 50, the Raiders kept theirs white during their first two home games to start the season.
When asked about their 50s on the field, O.co Coliseum general manager Chris Wright indicated that the Raiders would not be painting their 50s gold at all this season. The NFL maintained that the team was simply waiting until the end of the Major League Baseball season as the Raiders share the Coliseum with the Oakland Athletics. However, Wright’s statement stood in stark contrast.
As it turns out, Wright also may have been completely wrong on the issue. Speaking to the San Jose Mercury News, Raiders owner Mark Davis said on Wednesday that the team would, in fact, be painting the 50 gold in the O.co Coliseum. Davis said that the team is waiting for the end of the Athletics’ season and that the 50 will be filled in gold when the Raiders return home for a matchup with the Denver Broncos.
While it’s nice to see every NFL team honor the league and its history by conforming to this celebratory concept, it’s also sad to see the Raiders not be the one team not doing it. It seemed to fit in with the mentality that the silver and black has fostered for many years, but now they are just another one of the 32 teams in the league.
