Todd Gurley expects to be ready to play for Rams in Week Three
St. Louis Rams rookie running back Todd Gurley says that he should be ready to play in Week Three
Todd Gurley was selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams, but the rookie running back has yet to see the field in the new season. Gurley is still recovering from ACL surgery that he after tearing the ligament as a member of the Georgia Bulldogs. It’s looking increasingly likely that Gurley will get to finally take the field for the Rams in Week Three, though.
On Wednesday, Gurley wasn’t listed on the team’s injury report for the first time this season and has been participating in practice for the past few weeks. According to a report from Joe Lyons of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Gurley told reporters after practice on Wednesday that if he were asked by coaches if he’s ready to play come Sunday that he would say that he’s good to go.
While many players will fight through injuries and say they’re good to go even if they aren’t 100 percent, Gurley presents a different situation. Coming into Week Two, the rookie was asked the same question by reporters and responded with a non-committal “I don’t know.” Gurley saying that he feels like he’ll be ready to play shows definite signs of progress.
The Rams and head coach Jeff Fisher have proceeded with caution regarding Gurley’s recovery since he was drafted by St. Louis. The plan has always been to make sure that he’s 100 percent when he takes the field for an NFL game for the first time. That’s the plan that the coaches have established and that Gurley has been a willing participant in along the way. If he says that he feels he’ll be ready to go come Sunday as the Rams face the Pittsburgh Steelers, then he’s at least incredibly close to being at full health.
We still have no idea how Gurley will look after the injury or how he’ll fare as a player seeing NFL defenses for the first time. However, he was a transcendent talent at Georgia prior to his injury and could really help to open up the Rams offense if he’s even remotely as dominant as he was in college. With their stout defense, a seemingly reliable quarterback in Nick Foles, and the Seattle Seahawks off to a slow start in the NFC West, the addition of Gurley could very well make them a problem in the division.
