Drew Brees will not play this weekend against NFC South rival, the Carolina Panthers, on Sunday, according to New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton.

Those holding your breath that Drew Brees was going to somehow going to take the field on Sunday and keep his start streak going are going to be badly disappointed. The Saints quarterback has been ruled out for Sunday and Luke McCown will start for the Saints.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports that New Orleans Saints Quarterback Drew Brees will be out Sunday versus NFC South rival Carolina, according to Saints Head Coach Sean Payton. Brees is dealing with a torn rotator cuff.

This is tough news for the New Orleans Saints who will be without their best offensive playmaker on Sunday against a formidable Carolina Panthers defense. It’s tough to play in Charlotte against Ron Rivera’s potent front seven. Now the Saints will have to call on their backup quarterback and Verizon Wireless spokesperson, journeyman Luke McCown.

The New Orleans Backup Generator better be ready for the Carolina Panthers or the Saints might drop to a disheartening 0-3. New Orleans lost in Week 1 to an early Super Bowl contender in the Arizona Cardinals, 31-19 in Glendale. The Saints then lost a winnable game at home to NFC South rival Tampa Bay in Week 2, 26-19.

As soon as those Verizon commercials with Luke McCown started airing, many began to wonder how funny it would be if he actually had to start should Drew Brees go down. Was it foreshadowing or purely coincidental? Regardless, the New Orleans will play a playoff contender in Carolina without their best player on Sunday.

Maybe Luke McCown will shine in his biggest opportunity to date in Drew Brees’ absence? Or will the football world get used to him lying horizontally on their television screen? It’s the only way we could get McCown in the entire frame after being sacked. This is another great example of life imitating art.

Will Verizon have to go with a new spokesperson? If they were smart, Brock Osweiler of the Denver Broncos should appear in the next commercial. If Osweiler isn’t available, might Verizon give Scott Tolzien of the Green Bay Packers a call?
