FIFA 2022 World Cup will begin on Nov. 21

The FIFA executive committee announced today that the 2022 Qatar World Cup will begin on Nov. 21.
After 6 months of delegation the FIFA executive committee has finally settled on Nov. 21 as the day to kick off the 2022 FIFA World Cup, according to the Associated Press. It had already been previously decided that the World Cup would finish on Dec. 18, the date of Qatar’s national holiday.
In March FIFA decided to move the World Cup to the winter to avoid forcing players to play in the extreme summer heat of Qatar. The World Cup has usually been played from June to July.
Discussions to decide a start date have been held up due to the unusual circumstance FIFA international teams find themselves in. The 2022 World Cup will be cutting into many domestic leagues, some of them right in the middle of the season.
Allegations of bribery and rampant corruption have plagued FIFA’s public image…
FIFA’s executive committee, including former President Sepp Blatter, has been under international media scrutiny over the last 6 months. Allegations of bribery and rampant corruption have plagued FIFA’s public image in the mean time, leaving fans to question the validity of the sport in some places of the world. Coincidentally, criminal proceedings began today against Blatter for his role in criminal mismanagement of FIFA.
These allegations have floated around Qatar as well. It has recently come to light that UEFA President, and possible FIFA presidential suitor, Michel Platini ‘might’ have told American FIFA officials that his vote was for the US, before changing that vote to Qatar. Platini also commented on the news that a few of the FIFA executive committee members would not be attending a meeting in Zurich this week, saying that it wouldn’t be the first time this happened.
All the lights are on Qatar to produce an excellent World Cup in 2022, no matter how they secured it.
