The Syracuse Orange football team have been decimated by injuries at the QB position early in the season. They’ve suffered Achillies injuries, a hand injury and a concussion over the past few weeks. The Orange seemingly can’t catch a break, and things didn’t get easier with today’s opponent.
Last week, 5th string QB Zack Mahoney won a competition to start today’s game against No. 8 LSU. For a guy who likely would have never played a down, this game would a monumental test for the walk-on.
Mahoney struggled mightily in the first half, not being able to do anything against the tough SEC defense. However, in the middle of the 3rd quarter he finally found a hole in the defense with a 40-yard TD bomb to WR Brisly Estime.

This got the Syracuse team fired up and back in the football game.
At the time, this closed the gap on LSU’s lead to 17-10. Tigers RB Leonard Fournette, who has been a star throughout this game, would break away for a TD rush a short time later to make this a 24-10 game.
Moments such as this likely won’t happen for Mahoney ever again since he’s a 5th string QB. However, he’ll remember this moment for a long time.
