Jacksonville Jaguars: 1-1

As we predicted to be the case two days in: ladies and gentlemen, your Week 2 AFC South champs, the Jacksonville Jaguars.

That’s the surprising part, though managing a win against the Miami Dolphins, even at home, is pretty impressive as well.

There few worthy things to note for the Jaguars though, which might point to a nice step forward for the team. While Blake Bortles still has a long way to go to reach his potential, he played much better in Week 2 than he was in Week 1. He took better care of the ball hit a slightly higher percentage of his passes and just looked more comfortable against what is a solid defense.

It helped that he was hit and hurried less, and that the play-calling asked for him to do less than what he had to in Week 1. It also helped that the team committed to the run with rookie TJ Yeldon a bit more as well.

The offense has also had several answer the call, with Allen Robinson in particular stepping up the last few weeks. At some point, Julius Thomas will return to give Bortles even more weapons.

At that point, the defense really needs to step up. They have in moments, but it needs to be a more sustained effort.

As of now, Football Outsiders have them as their 20th defense after two weeks, so that’s an area they need to improve in if they want to have a shot to continue competing in the division.

Of course, this is a young team and one who we weren’t expecting much from. So far though, they have had glimpses that they may be better than the five or six wins many had slotted for them this year.

If they can improve the defense a little and continue to do the same offensively, they could be an interesting team as the season goes forward.
