Pittsburgh Steelers fans melted down after Ben Roethlisberger went down with a knee injury.

Pittsburgh’s outing against the St. Louis Rams started off with a bad omen: the field at the Edward Jones Dome catching fire. Perhaps the Steelers should’ve refused to come out of the locker room after Rams officials cleaned up all the charred ashes of scorched turf.

During the game’s third quarter Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger dropped back to pass when safety Mark Barron cam crashing toward the line in hunt for a sack. Barron stumbled in his attempt to reach Roethlisberger, but as he was tumbling to the ground caught the quarterback’s knee at an awkward angle. Roethlisberger’s knee bent sideways and he immediately crumbled to the turf.

Trainers came out to tend to Roethlisberger, and then helped him to the sidelines. Without even tending to him, they loaded Big Ben onto a cart and shuttled him to the locker room.

Steelers fans at home, watching their season effectively go up in flames, proceeded to melt down on Twitter. Roethlisberger was the motor that drove Pittsburgh’s high-powered offense – the team’s redeeming feature that has bailed out a subpar defense.

Below is a sampling of a proud fan base sizing its Internet straightjacket.
