The Simpsons premiered its 27th season this weekend with an episode that featured cheating and a divorce between Marge and Homer.

For the 27th straight year, The Simpsons is back with a new season and things have finally gone off the rails — literally. This weekend’s premiere episode ranks up there in terms of the most bizarre and possibly infuriating episodes the show has ever produced as fans will be polarized about it for a while.

This summer we were teased with the idea of Marge and Homer finally realizing that they aren’t meant for each other and getting a divorce. That indeed happened in the premier episode on Sunday and it didn’t end there.

While there wasn’t a real reason for Homer leaving Marge and the two separating their marriage, it was a catalyst for one of the most shocking Simpsons moments in series history.

Throughout the show’s run, we’ve see both Marge and Homer tempted with infidelity in the past but they’ve never gone through with it. But when Homer moves out of the house and leaves Marge behind, he meets and then sleeps with a character we later find out is named Candace — voiced by Girls star Lena Dunham.

Not only does Homer cheat on Marge, but it leads to a divorce that then leads to a relationship between Homer and Candace. This is deeper than any other Simpsons episode has ever gone and it made fans incredibly unsettled with what they were watching. This wasn’t just another episode where Marge and Homer have marital problems, one moves out and they win each other back — this was the end.

Of course, fans who were hoping it wasn’t true eventually got their wish — and that’s where the episode truly polarizes fans.

The final twist in the episode is that all of this infidelity and heartbreak is a dream inside of a dream inside of Girls episode — freaking seriously.

The episode ends with Simpsonized versions of Hannah Horvath and her on-again-off-again beau Adam, going over her tattoos. One of which represents the entire episode we just watched, to which Hannah states that she it one night while drunk in Brooklyn.

People love to sh– on the Armin Tamzarian episode but we may have a new contender for the most frustrating Simpsons episode ever.

It’s getting pretty hard to count, too.
