Robbie Ross: A Source For Late-Season Saves

The final week of the fantasy baseball season is upon us. If you are in your championship round, congratulations. If not, better luck next year. Regardless, I hope you are still paying attention in the final week, and with good season. If you need some cheap saves in this final week, there is a viable closer available, Robbie Ross.

In his three seasons with the Texas Rangers, Ross had a 3.98 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in 150 games. A spot in the rotation was not a good idea for Ross. In 2014, he had a 1-6 record with a 5.70 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in 12 starts. While this season isn’t much better, he may have found a role that works well.

The Rangers traded Robbie Ross to the Boston Red Sox in January. He made semi-regular appearances out of the bullpen, used between the sixth and eighth innings. From April 8 until Aug. 31, he had a 3.86 ERA, 44 strikeouts, 18 walks and 12 holds.

His value now comes from being the Red Sox closer. He took over the job at the beginning of September when Koji Uehara was placed on the DL and Junichi Tazawa started to struggle. Since taking over, Ross has converted all six chances, including four straight. There have been some negatives, like his 4.91 ERA, but he is closing out games.

With little to no closers left on the waiver wire, Robbie Ross is quite possibly your last chance to pick up saves. Although the Red Sox may not provide Ross with many save chances, but when they do Ross will be the guy called upon.

Robbie Ross has been picked up in 12.7 percent of ESPN.com leagues, bringing his current ownership percentage to 20 percent. His future may not be as a closer, but he is for the rest of 2015. If you could make the sacrifice at ERA and WHIP, Ross is available to get you those coveted saves in the final week.
