During Sunday’s 12-6 victory over the St. Louis Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had to be carted off the field following a big hit from Rams safety Mark Barron.

It has since come out that Roethlisberger suffered a sprain in his medial collateral ligament (MCL), an injury that is projected to keep him out for four to six weeks of action. But according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Roethlisberger feared something far worse: a broken leg.

Roethlisberger said the pain was pretty intense:

"Initially, my knee, my leg, everything hurt. Eventually, my knee started to feel better, but as I was going off the field I told the doc I feel like my leg is broke. It felt really bad. What they concluded was that was the two bones smacking together that caused the bone bruise. That’s what I felt initially."

In contrast to some of the complaints from Pittsburgh’s fans, Roethlisberger didn’t think Barron’s hit was dirty. He also added that the Steelers will be fine with veteran quarterback Michael Vick at the helm for the upcoming weeks.

"We brought [Vick] in here for a reason. He’s got a lot of experience. He’s got a good group around him here. Everybody’s got to do their job. We’ll be just fine … He’s helped me and I’ll continue to do what I can to help him."

The Vick-led Steelers will host the Baltimore Raves this Thursday. Over the next six week the team will play the San Diego Charges (on the road), the Arizona Cardinals (at home), the Kansas City Chiefs (on the road), the Cincinnati Bengals (at home), and the Oakland Raiders (at home).
