The Redskins’ defense is much improved over last year and has put up some impressive performances so far this season. Still, the secondary continues to be a cause of concern, even more so with DeAngelo Hall out for the next three to four weeks. There are rumors the team will need to bring up a player from the practice squad, not confident in the abilities of Bashaud Breeland and Justin Rogers.

Jalen Ramsey of Florida State is a versatile player who has played at both cornerback and safety. At 6’1″ and 202 pounds he is both adequately tall and durable to face off against large receivers. His size is a double-edged sword, however. He is not as quick and agile as some of the shorter, more ninja-like defensive backs out there.

His height and vertical leap have helped him develop into a ball hawk. In 28 games over his first two seasons he had 11.5 tackles for a loss, 16 passes defensed, and three forced fumbles. Ramsey is also a track star, an ACC champion in the long jump.

That is the kind of playmaker the Redskins could use in their secondary. In games, he magics himself around the field, putting pressure on quarterbacks one minute and jumping routes to make huge plays deep the next.

Though freakishly athletic and an immeasurable asset to Florida State, Ramsey does have room for improvement in some areas. Though there is dysfunction within the Redskins organization, new Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry is a seasoned professional who gets the most out of his guys.
