San Diego’s defense has been struggling this year, recently appearing porous against the Vikings, whose star running back Adrian Peterson ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns in Week 3.

Some of San Diego’s problems are due to injuries, but a big part of their troubles are rooted in longer-standing deficiencies, particularly when it comes to the run defense. Their pass rush isn’t spectacular either. The Chargers need help.

Oklahoma State defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah is making his mark in the Big 12, recently earning Defensive Player of the Week honors for his two sacks and six tackles against the Texas Longhorns. So far this season he has tallied 13 tackles and three sacks.

Ogbah is already a NFL-appropriate size at 6’4″ and 275 pounds. Couple his dimensions with a dose of freakish athleticism, instinct, and versatility, and you have a player who will be ready to make an impact from the first day. The Chargers can’t wait to rehabilitate their defense, so choosing a ready-to-go guy in the first round is a wise move.

Like many prospects, Ogbah has room for improvement when it comes to leverage and bend. Despite these deficiencies, he’s been able to terrorize offenses and put unwelcome pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
