Burger King black bun Halloween Whopper review: Is it any good?
By Josh Hill
Burger King is releasing a new black bun Halloween Whopper, so we tried it to see if it’s a trick or treat.
This Halloween is being celebrated early by Burger King as they’re rolling out a brand new burger in the month of October. It’s being dubbed the A1 Halloween Whopper — which seems fancy except for the fact that it really isn’t.
After all, we’re talking about Burger King which is a company on the cutting edge of creepy mascots and literally nothing else. This A1 Halloween Whopper confirms this, as it’s your same old Whopper repackaged in a black bun to get you to try it again. It’s a valiant effort, if we’re handing out gold stars, as Burger King is at least trying to tempt you into buying the same thing that has always been on the menu.
They do this by swapping out the traditional bun that has been served with hamburgers since the dawn of man and replacing it with an A1 Steak Sauce infused black bun.
Is that enough to make this worth getting or is it all something that ends up being more trick than treat?
For starters, the wrapper was wrapped upside down — which suggested things weren’t going to get off to a great start.
As for the Whopper itself, on the surface it looks just like it’s advertised as the black bun pops right out at you and entices you with intrigue. Really though, the intrigue stops with the visual appeal of the burger as there’s not a whole lot that’s difference from this Whopper as opposed to all the others with normal colored buns.
The first bite pretty much confirms as much. There’s no doubt
something
different about this burger’s bun as you can sort of taste the A1 sauce that has apparently been baked in. But you have to be searching for it and even then it’s not really something that leaps out on your palate.
One thing that does immediately stand out to you is the fact that this is basically all bun. Burger King is starting to heavily advertise this thing based on the appeal of the black bun — which is fitting since it’s a majority of what you’re chewing on. Carbs are carbs, no matter what color you make it or how much (or little) steak sauce you infuse into it.
The first bite is alight because you’re intrigued by the bun and you want to figure out what the hype is all about. But if you miss it on the first chew bites, there’s plenty of time to search for flavor in the bun as it’s basically the only thing you’re eating.
There’s also the matter of being tricked that needs to be addressed here as well. While it’s an A1 infused bun, there’s also A1 steak sauce on the burger itself as opposed to traditional ketchup that comes on a Whopper. All the other typical Whopper toppings are here from the lettuce and tomatoes right down to the pickles and mayo.
It’s no doubt an interesting combination of ingredients but it won’t set you on fire. If you were expecting something high class from Burger King, well you should probably re-evaluate your life. This is the same old Whopper repackaged with a black bun that has probably been infused with more cancer than it was steak sauce and it’s definitely more trick than treat.
Go ahead and try it for the novelty of it but that’s literally the only reason you should try this and even that’s stretching it.
