College Football Week 4 Results Against The Spread

facebooktwitterreddit

At first glance, I don’t think I had a very good week. If my pick em results are any indication, it might have been a rough week.

Here is how I did by points. The season long totals are in parenthesis.

1. 2-6 (10-13)

2. 7-7 (31-28)

3. 8-8 (28-32)

4. 4-5 (19-21)

5. 3-2 (6-7)

That leaves me at -3 for the week and -22 on the season. Tennessee snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and Virginia getting manhandled by Boise blew up part of my five pointers. I feel better about this week in pick em. Will the spread be kind? We will find out as we get closer to the weekend so as to get a more accurate spread!

My weekly total against the spread was 24-28, moving me to 93-100 on the season. With conference play starting up now, in theory, things should get easier. We won’t see as many spreads of 20 or more points, which should make things easier. Should being the operative word.

Here are my college football week 4 results against the spread. Winner against the spread are in BOLD. If you want to follow along, here are the links to the picks.

Cincinnati at Memphis(-9.5): MISS! Starting QB’s are sooooo overrated! Just ask Cincinnati, who put their freshman backup in when Gunnar Kiel left the game in the first quarter. All backup Hayden Moore did was set a school record for passing yards with 557. The bad news? The Bearcats still lost. But they didn’t get covered!

Boise State(-2.5) at Virginia: MISS! Ok, so much for Virginia’s good defense.

Stanford(-15.5) at Oregon State: MISS! The inconsistency that plagued Stanford early on seems to have subsided. Of course, when you can run the ball like the Cardinal have the last two games, you look really, really good.

Kansas at Rutgers(-14.5): HIT! I expected a closer game, but man, this was brutal to watch. Kansas might be worse than most of the MAC and half the Sun Belt…..

BYU at Michigan(-6.5): MISS! The Cougars just got beat up in this one. It would have been worse is De’Veon Smith didn’t leave the game with an injury in the second quarter.

Central Michigan at Michigan State(-26.5): HIT! Sparty looked bored…..

Southern Mississippi at Nebraska(-21.5): MISS! How bad is your secondary when Nick Mullens lights you up for 447 yards?

Georgia Tech(-7.5) at Duke: MISS! That’s what happens when you force Georgia Tech to pass. It’s like flipping a turtle on its back.

Central Florida at South Carolina(-14.5): HIT! This was closer than it should have been. The Gamecocks are in some serious trouble.

LSU(-24.5) at Syracuse: MISS! This was a spirited game by Syracuse, but they just couldn’t stop Leonard Fournette. Many teams will have that problem. Fournette became the first LSU player ever with back-to-back 200+ yard rushing games. Think about all of the good backs they have had. Jeremy Hill, Joseph Addai, and Dalton Hilliard come to mind. None of them did that. That is an impressive feat!

Navy(-7.5) at Connecticut: HIT! Once again, I should get extra points for picking the exact spread!

Bowling Green(-4.5) at Purdue: HIT! I should have made this a five pointer.

Indiana(-3.5) at Wake Forest: HIT! Same with this. Taking a lot of road teams makes me nervous though.

Northern Illinois at Boston College(-4.5): HIT! This was a good game if you could find it. The BC defense is among the best in the ACC. Now if only they could find an offense….

Florida International at Louisiana Tech(-10.5): MISS! Stupid half points!

New Mexico(-3.5) at Wyoming: HIT! Easy money!

Maryland at West Virginia(-16.5): MISS! This was a dominant performance by West Virginia. Is Maryland that bad, or are the Mountaineers a player in the Big 12? We find out this week!

Rice at Baylor(-33.5): MISS! Rice isn’t all that bad offensively. Good things happen when the Bears avoid turnovers. This was a statement game. How about 793 yards of offense? Who do they think they are, Texas Tech?

North Texas at Iowa(-25.5): This was the best Iowa has looked in the last four years. They dominated this game from every angle. This impressed me enough that I think they have a shot at Wisconsin this week. It affected my confidence pick in pick em!

Ohio at Minnesota(-10.5): HIT! More easy money. This line made absolutely no sense.

Oklahoma State(-3.5) at Texas: MISS! Poor Texas. They easily could have won this game.

Virginia Tech(-9.5) at East Carolina: MISS! How about the Pirates taking down Tech in back to back years? Without Shane Carden, Justin Hardy, and offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, no less!

Tennessee(-1.5) at Florida: MISS! Once again, Tennessee gives one away. They were 44-0 this century when leading by 13 points or more in the fourth quarter. This year they are 0-2 in that scenario.

Appalachian State(-8.5) at Old Dominion: MISS! Or not. I’m not all that surprised that the Mountaineers won. I am surprised that they shut out Old Dominion at home while hanging 49 on them though.

Massachusetts at Notre Dame(-29.5): MISS! Am I the only one concerned that the Irish gave up 27 to UMass? All anyone can talk about is the Domers hitting 60 for the first time since I graduated high school…..

Western Michigan at Ohio State(-32.5): HIT! The QB controversy has simmered down for now. Of course, the Buckeyes probably could have brought back Steve Belisari for one game and still won this.

San Diego State at Penn State(-14.5): MISS! I was wrong. Penn State only needed one defensive score to cover.

Marshall(-6.5) at Kent State: HIT! You get a gift when the game goes into double overtime and the team you picked still covers the spread.

Miami(OH) at Western Kentucky(-20.5): MISS! I knew better.

Nevada at Buffalo(EVEN): MISS! I didn’t see that one coming. Of course, Nevada’s losses are to Texas A&M and Arizona. Buffalo’s loss was to Penn State.

Louisiana-Monroe at Alabama(-38.5): HIT! The Tide pitched a shutout and still didn’t cover. I’m glad all of these huge lines are mostly coming to an end!

Middle Tennessee State at Illinois(-4.5): MISS! I don’t even know what to say about Illinois anymore. They really should have lost this game.

TCU(-6.5) at Texas Tech: MISS! Tech is back! What would have happened had Patrick Mahomes not been hobbled for the last 52 minutes of the game? TCU got lucky here.

California(-2.5) at Washington: HIT! The defense for the Bears actually looked respectable in this one.

Army at Eastern Michigan(-1.5): MISS! My lucky quarter takes its first loss of the season.

Texas A&M(-6.5) vs. Arkansas: HIT! Arkansas played a good game for the first time in three weeks. That should count for something.

Vanderbilt at Mississippi(-27.5): MISS! I was afraid of this.

Colorado State(-9.5) at UTSA: MISS! Every time the Rams looked like they were going to pull away, the Roadrunners reeled them back. This was a moral victory for UTSA, if those still count for Coker’s crew.

Florida Atlantic(-10.5) at Charlotte: MISS! Both Atlantic and International cost me picks on half points!

Akron at Louisiana-Lafayette(-7.5): MISS! Where did that come from?

Arkansas State at Toledo(-7.5): HIT! The Rockets didn’t even need Hunt, though he was available.

Mississippi State at Auburn(-2.5): HIT! The experts on GameDay were way too confident in Auburn with no real reason to be. It doesn’t matter what changes they make on offense. The Tigers won’t improve until they stop the run!

Missouri at Kentucky(-2.5): HIT! Missouri has been begging to lose for about two weeks now.

North Carolina State(-14.5) at South Alabama: MISS! What a performance by the Wolfpack! They scored five rushing touchdowns in this one.

UCLA(-2.5) at Arizona: MISS! So much for a good game. This was over even before Anu Solomon exited the game in the second quarter.

Ball State at Northwestern(-19.5): HIT! The Wildcats aren’t built to cover big spreads. They are built to frustrate the hell out of opposing offenses though.

Hawaii at Wisconsin(-24.5): HIT! I was sweating this one.

Utah at Oregon(-10.5): HIT! I knew the line looked a little off. I did not expect Utah to go into Eugene and kick the Ducks up and down the field though.

Georgia Southern(-15.5) at Idaho: HIT! Matt Breida only scored twice, so he didn’t quite do it all by himself.

Fresno State at San Jose State(-2.5): MISS! SJSU got thumped by Air Force and Oregon State, then blows out Fresno. Makes perfect sense…..

USC(-5.5) at Arizona State: HIT! Again, I wasn’t expecting a blowout, but a win is a win.

For those of you keeping track, the road teams went 30-21 against the spread with the Texas A&M-Arkansas game at a neutral site. More road teams won against the spread than home teams for the third straight week. Will it continue into conference play?
