Ty Lawson has his sights set on the reigning MVP in Stephen Curry

Ty Lawson could be the x-factor for the Houston Rockets in the 2015-16 NBA season. The talented point guard comes to Houston leaving a tumultuous situation in Denver and is trying to leave his personal issues behind him as well. Lawson spent 30 days in a rehabilitation center this offseason after his second DUI arrest in the past year. Now it’s time for a new chapter with the Rockets and he’s shooting for the moon.

There’s no doubt that the mentality of the Rockets heading into this season is to shoot for the title. Their hope is that the addition of Lawson will vault them to being one of the top contenders for the 2016 title and possibly help them in dethroning a Golden State Warriors team that eliminated Houston in the Western Conference Finals last year. Lawson took notice of that series and thinks that he can be a major factor in changing the tides in that matchup, specifically in terms of pressing Stephen Curry.

In an interview with Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Lawson said that he was watching the Western Conference Finals and thought that the Rockets were letting Curry—the league’s reigning MVP—coast. Lawson dug deeper, saying that he thought that Houston needed someone to continually press Curry when he’s playing defense and not just let him slide at times on that end of the floor.

Regardless of anyone’s thoughts on Lawson or how he’ll fit in Houston, you can’t deny that he seems to be ready to try and take down the big dogs in the West. Calling out the NBA MVP is a pretty good indication of that and Lawson basically said he’s ready to come right at Curry.

If Lawson and James Harden can learn to coexist in the Rockets’ offense, Houston could be a legitimate threat to take down Curry and the Warriors. However, that “if” looms large as we are just entering the preseason and Lawson hasn’t shown what kind of form he’s in or how he fits with Houston. I’m not sure it’s the right time to be calling out the reigning MVP and a member of the defending champs, but Lawson has already filled his plate now that it’s out there.
