The Redskins-Eagles matchup could be moved to teams’ Week 8 bye due to Hurricane Joaquin

The Washington Redskins and the Philadelphia Eagles are scheduled to have a relatively important NFC East showdown this week in Washington D.C.. The winner could gain traction and momentum in a weak division whose best team is currently devastated by injuries. However, Mother Nature may not allow them to play this game in Week 4 as scheduled.

With Hurricane Joaquin likely to make its way up the East Coast this weekend, the NFL is working on putting together a contingency plan for if the Redskins-Eagles game can’t be played on Sunday. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, a key factor in their plans is that the Redskins and Eagles both have a bye in Week 8:

Why that’s important, according to La Canfora, is that it gives the NFL the option to postpone the Week 4 game and alternatively play it in Week 8:

What that means is that the teams’ byes would be moved up four weeks, but their schedules would remain the same otherwise.

Though it certainly throws a wrinkle into either team’s season, that seems like the best plan of action if the hurricane is going to be an issue for Sunday’s game. Hopefully it won’t come to that and it might just be regular inclement weather, but it’s good to know that the league has a strong plan for place if the worst does occur.
