Giants’ Victor Cruz receives PRP shot, could miss additional time
New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz received a PRP shot in his calf, delaying his long-awaited return even further.
On Monday, it appeared as though New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz was aiming to play on Sunday versus the Buffalo Bills. Now however, those plans have changed and Cruz could be missing more time with his bum calf.
According to David J. Chao, a former NFL team physician, Cruz has received a PRP (platelet rich plasma) injection into the calf muscle after experiencing more pain during Wednesday’s practice.
Cruz had already been ruled out earlier this week for Sunday’s game against the Bills, and the PRP injection also removes his from consideration for the Week Five match-up at home against the 49ers. Ideally, the injection will run its course and Cruz would be able to return for the Week Six game with the Eagles, but given the fact that Cruz has yet to endure a full week of practice this season, the Giants won’t commit to anything at this point.
After setting the world on fire during his first three seasons with the Giants (241 receptions, 3,626 yards, 23 touchdowns), Cruz was limited to just six games in 2014 after tearing his patellar tendon. He still managed to produce 23 catches for 337 yards, but was held to just one touchdown through those six contests.
The wide receiver was looking to regain his place among the best receivers in football in 2015, but strained his left calf in early August training and has thus far been unable to take the field this season. In his stead, Giants receivers rank 16th in the NFL with 764 yards and an average of 10.9 yards per catch. Odell Beckham Jr. leads the team with 19 catches for 269 yards and two touchdowns. He’s followed by Rueben Randle (124 yards) and Shane Vereen (122 yards), with no other receivers over 100 yards on the season.
