Cowboys vs Saints, 26-20: Full highlights, final score and more
By Jack Crosby
The Saints got their first win of the season on Sunday and they did so in dramatic fashion over the Cowboys
Sunday night the Dallas Cowboys strolled into New Orleans to take on the Saints, and when it was all said and done in this one, the Saints got their first win in a wild ending.
The Cowboys would get on the scoreboard first in this one, notching themselves a 30-yard field goal from Dan Bailey following their first drive of the game. Near the end of the first quarter, though, the Saints would fire back with a score of their own, except theirs found the end zone. Drew Brees hit Josh Hill for the three-yard touchdown strike to give New Orleans the 7-3 lead.
Early on in the second quarter we got some controversy as Cowboys running back Joseph Randle leaped over a pile and into the end zone, but he lost the ball in the process. After the officials looked the play over, however, it was determined that he got the ball across the line with possession, giving Dallas the lead back at 10-7 following the one-yard scoring run.
That would be all the scoring that we’d see in the first 30 minutes, but that wasn’t all for the news in the first half. And, it was not good news for the Cowboys, as star linebacker Sean Lee left the game with what we learned eventually was a concussion.
Sadly for Dallas, the injury plague didn’t leave them in the first half. Right off the bat in the second half on the opening kickoff, running back Lance Dunbar went down and had to be helped off the field with a knee injury.
The Saints would get points on the board following their first drive of the third quarter, a 51-yard field goal from Zach Hocker. A few minutes later, the Cowboys would answer right back with a 38-yard Dan Bailey field goal of their own, regaining the lead in this one at 13-10. Right as the period was coming to a close, another Saints field goal from Hocker would tie all up again at 13.
These two would battle back-and-forth in the fourth quarter, but it would be the Saints getting the points on the board to take the lead. Mark Ingram would take one in from nine yards out that, after official review, was indeed ruled a score. That put New Orleans up 20-13 with 8:02 left in the game.
Finally, though, we would get some excitement in this one. Brandon Weeden would lead the Cowboys on an eight-play, 91-yard drive and that would be capped off by a gorgeous 17-yard touchdown catch from Terrance Williams that would eventually tie the game up at 20 with 1:51 to go.
Following that amazing sequence, it was time for Drew Brees to shine in his return. Although, things didn’t quite work out as planned. Brees would lead them 68 yards down the field, and on a third down from the Dallas 12, they set up for the field goal. Well, that was a field goal that slammed right off the left upright, and just like that, we were headed to overtime.
In the overtime period, the Saints would not let this last much longer. An 80-yard TD pass to C.J. Spiller would put this one to bed for good and the Saints get their first win of the year, 26-20.
