Presidential hopeful Donald Trump weighs in on the Washington Redskins name controversy, and does so pretty much right where you’d expect to him to be.
Donald Trump has made an even bigger name for himself in the past year, as he is making a serious bid to become the next president of the United States. He is well-known for not being afraid to speak his mind and kicking political correctness to the curb and Monday’s comments are no less controversial.
USA Today reports that the Republican presidential candidate has no problem with the Washington Redskins’ team name.
"“Honestly, I don’t think they should change the name, unless the owner wanted to. I know Indians that are extremely proud of that name. They think it’s a positive,” Trump said."
Fortunately for Trump, Redskins owner Dan Snyder has no problem with the team name and has no plans to change it any time soon. However, it remains to be seen whether there is any truth to Trump’s claim that he personally knows Native Americans who support the name.
The Redskins have recently endured controversy due to their team name, as it is considered by some to be offensive to Native Americans. Washington also has other things to worry about, as they are seeking their first playoff win since the 2005 season and are still in rebuilding mode.
It should come as no surprise that the brash billionaire opposes the Redskins changing their team name, as he has never been one to back down from his true opinions. This includes taking stances on sports debates, as he recently came out in support of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady during the DeflateGate saga. The business tycoon also revealed that he believes Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco is one of the elite players at his position.
Trump appears to be in position to secure the Republican presidential nomination, but it remains to be seen whether his outspoken nature will help him against the Democratic nominee.
